Oh man, how the time just whips by like a passing train that you almost failed to notice because you were dicking around with your iPhone. It give you the same cold sweat that trickles down your spine.

The large congruence of upcoming events has me a little freaked out but no more motivated than ever. My procrastination gene is in full effect as I become more and more distracted on a daily basis from the real things that require my attention. Weddings, moves, prepping houses for rental and regular old work are harder to think about when your RSS reader of choice isn’t at zero unread. Or your email. Or your Twitter. Or your Flickr. Or any other number of things that have been embedded into the daily ritual.

To add insult to injury, shit just gets fucked up all the time. While I’m know for some seriously bad car karma, where things can go wrong for me, they often do. Just this week, a rather large cashier’s check went missing from a time sensitive delivery. Thanks to an inefficiant banking system, they has yet to enter the check into their own system. Not only couldn’t they reissue it or cancel it (for a fee), but they couldn’t even see it in their system. Even though they issued it, the check didn’t exist. So, I had to wait for it to percolate through the vast caverns of this financial monstrosity for the privalege to pay them $35 to cancel the damn thing and another five for a new one. For added excitement, it can take over a week for the canceled amount to return into my balance. I was given a free alternative, after 90 days, if no one had cashed it, the amount could be remitted to me. All I can think of is switching to a credit union, who actually need customer satisfaction to maintain their businesses.

I may even just cash out and stuff it in a matress.

Can you blame me for my desired distractions?

(ps. I’ve written this on my iPhone using the newly released WordPress software. Much like the web version there is no spell checking, on which I’ve come to rely. I don’t have many people’s complaint over the lack of copy/paste, but a system wide spell check would be a godsend. Predictive typeing really only helps mistypes on a small taxtileless keyboard, though I can’t imagine living without it. In fact I was complimented on my typing speed the other day but didn’t give credit where it’s due. All you have to do is mash your thumbs in the general direction of the letter you want and let the software interpret the word. After I post this I’ll still have to go back and give it a once over.)

Like many others who already have an iPhone, the new hardware was only mildly intriguing. I won’t say that I don’t want it, but I can live without it. I didn’t have to stand in line for the first one and I’m sure as hell not going to for the 3G.

However, the 2.0 software and its features are enough to do something stupid over. Again, like many others who already have an iPhone, I downloaded the firmware a day early and played around with the App Store before it was officially released. Many of my hopes and dreams were fulfilled (except easy switching between inboxes in Mail…) and the glut of free apps on the store we’re great. I even made a few purchases, wondering what Apple might be thinking when they saw these early transactions.

But being an early adopter always has it’s issues. (I have a first gen MBP. Core Duo, not Core 2 Duo…) While most of the features worked fine, there were some frequent crashes and outright sluggishness in seemingly simple apps. It turns out, that the firmware that I grabbed was really meant for the iPhone 3G which while very similar enough differences to make it an issue. Luckily, it is meant to be easy to side-grade to the proper version for the older phones.

The problem is, that “meant to be easy” does not imply guaranteed ease. So, following the same process as installing the early release version (downloading and holding option while hitting the upgrade button in iTunes) I tried to install the correct version. I few seconds later, iTunes pops an error telling me that it can’t be installed and gives a typical cryptic error code. In addition, the phone is essentially bricked, stuck in recovery mode with presumably nothing in the internal storage. Being an IT professional, I didn’t freak, but calmly googled the error which returned some advice just to try again. So, I do which pops the same error with a new code. Google, rinse and repeat.

After a few tries, I give the older 1.1.4 firmware a shot. Ah, this time I get a new error code that looks a little more specific (larger number…) which I google and get an Apple KB article. The gist of this one is to kill iTunes and the Apple Mobile Device support (which they don’t explain how to). By deleting the Receipts (/Library/Receipts) for the two and running the iTunes installer from Apple’s website, I got a fresh copy of something that needed to be reset in order to re-wipe my phone.

Just for fun, I let it re-download the .apsw file again, just in case it needed to register somewhere in iTunes that it had legitimately received it rather than being coaxed into using it. Surprisingly, that worked and the restore process once again is working. Apple’s servers must be back in working order as well, because it was able to activate right away as well. The whole process burned through nearly all of my battery, even though it was plugged in most of the time leaving me with a quarter charge which will now have to last me for the rest of the day.

It would be nice to know, on a more granular level, what was wrong so that in the future you wouldn’t have to blow iTunes completely away in order to fix it. In the long run, it didn’t take that long to do, so I’m not going to fret over it, however.

On a side note, the iPhone 2.0/iTunes 7.7 software seems to take significantly longer to back up the phone. I don’t know if it has to do with the additional 3rd party software or what, but it isn’t backing up my music because each time I wipe it I have to push it all back. But that is my fault for manually managing the music rather than letting it sync.

The question is, had I known, would I have done it in the first place? Of course, I love being an early adopter and tinkering with my gadgets. Interestingly, I haven’t ever jailbroken my iPhone simply for the fact that it is my phone and stability becomes an issue. I do hanker for a Terminal app or at least an SSH app that would allow me to connect to my servers. I’m still going to wait for Apple to allow that one to come through legitimate channels though.

My, how plans change. One minute we’re on course with everything (relatively) laid out in an orderly fashion and the next we’re scrambling to catch our bearings after the floor drops out. While I’ll be the first to admit the failure of a mixed metaphor, there seemingly can be a time and place for such transgressions. Swearing under your breath as one more thing goes south is a common occurrence for me now.

It’s not that things a bad, per se, but I think I could do without all of the drama.

We’re moving to Baltimore. Oh, wait, now we’re moving to Chicago. This is my shining example, the most dramatic of a long list that I dare not commit to “paper”. After what seemed to be a very long ordeal for Bethany to apply to and accept a grad program, we had settled on MICA in Baltimore. The program was perfect, run by a very well respected designer who’s admirations came from both university and professional sources. We had also come to grips with the idea of Baltimore. While it wasn’t our highest choice in cities, we had come to build a short but potent list of pluses.

Then, on Monday of last week, a few weeks after accepting and putting a large, non-refundable deposit down for MICA, Bethany gets an urgent call from SAIC in Chicago (hence the C). They’ve decided, after previously telling her that she wasn’t going to receive any scholarships, that they wanted to give her a full-ride!

Now, when someone offers you $70 grand you usually don’t say no, but there were several days of serious debate and a weeks worth of waffling. We had sold ourselves on Baltimore, even though Chicago is bigger and had more opportunities. MICA had a program that seemed to fit in a smaller more intimate setting but SAIC is larger and arguably better known where Bethany has a chance to be a big fish in a big pond. Also, my own proximity to work was called into play, with Chicago working out better even with tele-commuting.

In the end, the logical choice won with several professionals urging us in the direction of the money. All of which resets us back to the beginning. More research, apartment hunting and altered logistics now with even less time to execute.

We’ve come to grips, but with each passing day there is more to do. That list I’m avoiding keeps expanding.

At least I’m not bored. I’m not having fun, but there is nothing boring about life right now.

While I’ve been in front of a computer for a good chunk of my life and been online for a great subset of that, I’ve always been fairly lax in the social aspects of the modern computer age. Primarily, I read. I consume large amounts of mostly useless data on a daily basis. Now, with the iPhone, I have the ability to feed my compulsive reading habits constantly. At the same time, I’ve reached the edges of my tried and true sites are devoured in mere minutes. Like the gold farmer, I race back and fourth waiting for news items to respawn in their feeds.

But while I take all of this in. I don’t contribute in kind. Like a torrent leecher, I read others blogs without commenting. I rarely post on my own blog, let alone tweet, upload to flickr or youtube. With all of this social networking, I am the wraith like anthropological researcher, observing but not interfering. My Second Life is about as dead as my first.

I’m not sure what it really means, but I not fully engaged in the technological life that I embrace. I have no excuse with my constant connection. Two thumbed typing should become as natural as the home row.

I need to interconnect. I need to let go. I need to speak now, while the time is right, without overthinking.

I need to take on the world.

We’ve elected to leave our iPhones here in the good ol’ U. S. of A. For various reasons, mostly involving money, we thought it would be a bad idea to bring them, including; $1.99/min voice and $0.016/KB data (thats $16.384/MB!) and the potential replacement costs should something happen. Staying behind as well will my trusty MacBook Pro.

So, we are going on a bit of a technological camping trip. You know, deprived of modern conveniences and forced to rough it like the pioneers. Packed with me are; an old 3.2 meg Sony Cybershot with a whopping 128 MB card, an ailing 4th Gen 20GB iPod, a 1st Gen 1GB iPod Shuffle as a backup and a 3+ year old Dell Latitude C400 running Debian Etch loaded with Picassa and Gimp for photos. I’m also lugging around my non-iPhone work cell, a rugged Motorola ic502 and my Nintendo DS with a few games. Oh, and a book, Samuel Delany‘s Dhalgren which I’ve read a few times through.

I know, talk about a rough time… It will only get up to the mid 80′s while we’re there too!

Bethany is taking her new Kodak Z812 and her video iPod to pull photos with, so she is not slumming it as much as I am for a change.

There are claims of internet access, so hopefully I’ll be able to update while I’m down there. It’s not going to be a live-blog by any means, but I want to at least post some twitter and a photo or two.

See you there!

I have an iPhone, and a have found it to be nearly perfect. I had held out as long as I could, but it is the perfect storm of handheld consumer electronics. Sure, there are others out there with better features, faster connections and better service providers but no other device pulls it all together like the iPhone. IMAP for my Gmail (I don’t have all of my personal accounts on the iPhone as it chews up too much bandwidth. Yes, I have that many.) and for my work email (Exchange IMAP works just fine, people!). The latest updates make the Map.app even more useful with GPS-like wifi trilateration. Hahlo for my Twitter and NewsGator‘s mobile site to sync with NetNewsWire (All of NewsGator’s personal products including NetNewsWire and their service are now free! I was willing to pay for it, and did, but this is even better! Get it!) to get my RSS. As a Mac user, no other device will even sync properly without the use of third party software like missing sync! I even get my iPhoto pics on my iPhone, smartly scaled down for its screen to take up less space.

It even has its own reality distortion field built in! Undecideds and nay-sayers play with for 30 seconds and clench their jaws with envy.

Mind you, my cell phone is worth more than the car I drive to work in. (It’s cheaper to keep it than to get rid of it.) I did sacrifice to get it. I am now chained for the next year and nine months to an uncaring, evil service provider that snoops on my connection for the government and would like to filter it for the entertainment industry.

But, there are times when it is well worth its pound of flesh and I have been know to not pull my laptop from its bag in the evening (gasp!) in favor of the iPhone for couch browsing. Even my beloved Wii couldn’t do that for me…

As and aside to John, Leopard is mostly great. Especially Time Machine. I’ve been using it since day one and it just works. (Although beware of large oft changed files such as Microsoft Entourage email database files and Parallels virtual disks. Exclude them and use a less frequent backup system for those types of files. Also, get a really big hard drive for backup.)

I know I sound like a cheerleader but Apple and the small developers who congregate around them make the best products around. I just don’t see the quality on the windows side. (Why can’t windows work as nicely as an Xbox 360? It boggles my mind.)

I’ve had my iphone for less than two weeks and I knew it would happen eventually. While doing laundry in the basement and I went to empty the dehumidifier. Bending over at greater than a 90 degree* angle the iPhone slipped out of the protective, deep front pocket of my Scott e-Vest and landed, face down, on the rough hard concrete. My heart dropped and my ears listened for the tinkle of broken optical grade glass.

Slowly picking it up from the ground, I was relieved to see that the glass was intact and other than a few minor dings on the silver edging everything was intact.

Now that the first drop is out of the way, I think I can be more zen about it.

*The iPhone does not seem to have a degree symbol available in the soft keyboard. With as often as we all discuss the weather, global coordinates and geometric angles via our various digital devices one would think that would be no brainer.
